A Bonnie bag without the hardware... No D-rings, no swivel hooks or adjuster buckle... Here's how you could do that and still achieve an adjustable bag strap.
So here I've made the Bonnie moon bag in size large. (There's also a size medium in this pattern). I used only re-purposed fabrics for this bag. The outer fabrics are cut-up jeans (and a jeans skirt), and the lining fabric was previously a duvet cover. I used Vlieseline H630 fusible interlining on the outer fabric pieces.
I omitted all the hardware and sewed my own bag strap, also from re-purposed jeans fabrics.
So what do you need to do to make this kind of adjustable bag strap without hardware?
First of all, create your Bonnie bag according to the step by step instructions, all the way to step 33. So instead of attaching D-rings, do this:
1. Create the bag strap
Make one long bag strap and one short (follow steps 37-38 in the instructions). However both should be a bit longer. Lengthen your long strap to 128 cm long, same width. One of the short edges should be finished, like in the instructions.
Lengthen your small piece of the strap, to 11 cm long. You'll only need one.
2. Place inside bag and sew
Fold the small bag strap just like you would in step 34 of the instructions. Place it inside the bag (except without a D-ring) and put it inside the bag, between the zipper and outer fabrics (see step 35).
Also place the long strap inside the bag, on the other side of the zipper. Also between the outer fabrics and the zipper, but not folded. The strap's finished short edge and the whole strap should be inside the bag. The short side that's unfinished faces out.
Sew, just like in step 35.
3. Turn the bag, tie the strap
Turn the bag right sides out. Check it out!
Now you can tie the strap. First, bring the long strap through the short strap. Then tie.
