At last the perfect pants for kids! Because we really do want them to be comfortable and able to play, while still looking stylish right? Tyra & Todd are pull on pants with a loose fit and two pleats in the front, and they look really great on both girls and boys.

Sewn with the simple waistband and without pockets they’re a quick and easy project, but for those who want to work extra with their pants we’ve included several nice details and alternatives: Front and/or back pockets; Paperbag waistband, with or without ties; Folded hem, double roll hem or pant cuffs.

Skill level: 2/3 (Level guide).

Knit fabric with 20-60% stretch and medium to medium-heavy weight (approx. 200-340 gr/m2). We recommend for example college, french terry, cotton jersey, ponte di roma, knit jacquard, and other pants fabrics with stretch. If you’re sewing the pants with pant cuffs, make sure to use ribb fabric for the cuffs since they require very good stretch and recovery. Prewash all fabrics before cutting, knit fabrics often shrink with the first wash.

The fabric requirements above is an estimation for 150 cm (60”) wide fabrics, not preshrunk. We recommend you to add 20 cm (8”) extra if you’re purchasing new fabric for this project. You should also account for shrinkage, and add extra if you want to pattern match.

Elastic for both waistbands. Approx. 3 cm (1 1/8”) shorter than the child’s waist width. See length in chart below. Width depends on size:
Sizes 74-98: 2,5 cm (1”).
Sizes 104-122: 3 cm (1 1/8”).
Sizes 128-140: 3,5 cm (1 3/8”).
Sizes 146-152: 4 cm (1 5/8”).

Optional: light weight fusible interfacing, with or without stretch. If you’re sewing the pants with paperbag waist and using a fabrics with lots of drape, the interfacing will help stabilize the paperbag ruffle (see step 23).

The tutorial also includes a size chart and a fabric requirements chart. Measurements are provided in both the metric and imperial system.

Choose size in width based on the child’s waist width and hip width. To make sure the pants will also be as perfect as possible in length, measure the child’s inside leg and height. If these measurements point to a different size, we recommend to mix sizes. It’s not recommended to size up on width since the pants already have a loose fit.

Inside leg is measured from the crotch down to the floor, on a standing child.
