Note! This is a quilt pattern in centimeters. All cutting instructions are based on centimeters so a quilt ruler in cm is recommended. The seam allowance is 6.35 cm (1/4") which is the standard quilting seam allowance.

______

Gryning is based on the classic Irish Chain quilt pattern, a timeless design in which Nine patch blocks are combined with sashing strips and cornerstones.

If you’re new to quilting, I recommend starting with one of the two smaller projects before moving on to the large throw. They’re a great way to practise your quilting skills and build confidence. For Swedish speaking sewists, I recommend the Threads+ online sewing courses which includes several beginner courses in quilting. These courses are a great addition to this pattern.

The Gryning quilt pattern can be sewn on a regular domestic sewing machine. However, keep in mind that quilting the three layers together can be challenging on a smaller sewing machine, especially when making the large throw. A larger domestic sewing machine with plenty of space will make the process much easier.

MY SAMPLES:

  • Orange/white: Small throw. All fabrics are light-weight woven cotton. Batting is Hobbs 80/20.
  • Green/yellow: Large throw. All fabrics are light-weight woven cotton. Batting is Hobbs Poly-down.
  • Beige/brown: Tote bag. All fabrics are light-weight woven cotton. Interfacing: Vlieseline H250 + batting Hobbs 80/20.

Skill level: 2/3 (Level guide).

YOU WILL NEED:
- Fabric for the quilt top, binding and backing (or lining if you’re making the tote bag): Lightweight woven fabric, preferably quilting cotton, cotton sheeting or another woven cotton fabric. Avoid heavy fabrics, a fabric weight of approximately 120-150 g/m² is ideal. The fabric should be firm (no stretch).

- Batting and stabilisers for the tote bag: Choose thin batting or a padded stabiliser. Vlieseline Style-Vil is a foam stabiliser that provides both padding and structure. Vlieseline H640 is a fusible alternative that adds padding but not as much structure. It can be combined with a stabiliser such as Vlieseline H250 for additional support. H250 is also a great choice to stabilize the bag straps with.

- Batting for the throws: You can choose from different materials and thicknesses depending on the look and feel you want. Thinner batting (low loft) is easier to handle, while thicker batting (high loft) creates a puffier result.

Cotton batting gives a classic quilt feel and often becomes softer and more flexible after washing, while polyester batting is generally lighter, fluffier and more affordable. Cotton/polyester blends are also a great option. Always check the manufacturer’s recommended maximum distance between quilting lines.

I used Hobbs 80/20 batting for my small throw (orange and white) and Hobbs Poly-Down, which has more loft, for my large throw (green and yellow).

- Other tools and supplies: Cutting mat, rotary cutter and a large quilting ruler in cm (e.g. 15 x 60 cm), and if you want, a smaller quilting ruler (e.g. 16 x 16 cm). A sewing machine with a universal needle, approximately size 80/12, for piecing the quilt top, and a universal or quilting needle, approximately size 90/14, for quilting the layers together. Standard-weight polyester sewing thread, an iron and ironing board, sewing clips, and pins or safety pins.

- Useful but optional: Spray starch to stabilise the fabrics, and temporary basting spray to hold the layers together during quilting.

These are the measurements of each finished project:

Tote bag: 60 x 37 cm.
Small throw: 95 x 125 cm.
Large throw: 150 x 187 cm.
